和田马家军

 和田马家军 is a Chinese warlord state in northwestern China with a population of 478.59 K. It borders  甘马（马家军）和 青马（马家军） to the east,  西藏 and the  英属印度 to the south, and  新疆 to the west and north. Ruled by Ma Hushan, it is part of the Ma Clique, together with  甘马（马家军）,  宁马（马家军）, and  青马（马家军）.

With a population of just under 480.000 people and with no starting industry or resources, Khotan Ma is the weakest of the Ma Clique warlords and the weakest of all Chinese warlord states. Still, it has the potential to become quite powerful if it can unite the Ma cliques, and perhaps even all of China, under its rule.

Khotan Ma can rename itself to Xinjiang Ma if it successfully conquers  新疆. Like the other Ma cliques, Khotan Ma can form  西北三马 by uniting all of the Ma warlords' territory. If it (or any other Ma Clique walord) conquers all of China, it can form 大马.

If Khotan Ma completes the national focus 石藏的政变, then it becomes the 和田埃米尔国 and can instead form the 中国苏丹国.

历史背景

The Ma Clique warlords were all Generals in the military of the  中华民国, who controlled all of Mainland China until it was overtaken by the communist People's Liberation Army. The origins of the clique can be traced to Muslim generals who served in the military of the  清朝, most notably in the Kansu (or Gansu) Braves army, who fought in the Boxer Rebellion of 1899-1900 against invading foreign forces. The actual warlord clique was established and continued by the succeeding two generations of their descendants.

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Ma Clique forces fought against the Japanese and later Ma Bufang, overall leader of the Ma Clique, was ordered by the Kuomintang to invade  新疆 in the 1940s to intimidate and help oust the forces of the pro Soviet Governor Sheng Shicai. The Ma Clique forces also clashed with the forces of the Second East Turkestan Republic during the Ili Rebellion.

 和田马家军 uses the shared Warlords national focus tree along with the other warlords, along with a unique branch only available to Khotan Ma, as well as a branch shared with the other Ma warlords. It also gets access to the new shared Nationalist和共产主义 focus trees for the warlords at the end of the tree.

The Khotan Ma national focus tree can be divided into 2 branches and 3 sub-branches and 2 country specific branches:

Undermine KMT Rule Branch

This branch is exclusive to  和田马家军. The leftmost section removes the Ma clique from the country and forms the 和田埃米尔国 and puts the Uyghurs into power. It also gives claims into the  苏联 Central Asian territory. The central focus allows the  英国 and the  英属印度 to send volunteers. The rightmost section gives bonuses against  中华苏维埃共和国和 新疆 as well as a division template.

Call for Aid/Strike the Governor Branch

This branch is exclusive to  和田马家军. It involves going to war with  新疆和 哈密汗国, if it exists, for the control of the Sinkiang region.  和田马家军 may then create the Sinkiang Ma Clique.

Sideline Family Conflicts Branch

策略与指南

Playing as  和田马家军 is very hard, the first problem that needs to be addressed is the player's total lack of industry.  和田马家军 actually holds the title for having the lowest starting industry out of any nation in the game (not counting any releasable nations). To which it shares it with  蒙疆和 甘马（马家军）.

Apart that its population is smaller, but unlike  蒙疆,  和田马家军 takes the advantage of the opportunity to start with a focus tree.

Pick "Develop Khotan" as the first focus. Immediately rush it down until you get everything necessary to produce and build anything. Expand the industry, take research slot focuses, anything that will contribute to survive and counterattack on Sinkiang. Your goal will be to declare and unite all of the Ma nations as soon as possible, even sooner depending if  日本 decides to go with its fascist branch or not. And least not to forget is to survive and take down Sinkiang. Take "Strengthening Our Position" and go for opposition, in order to go down and produce and get more manpower out of it. Make sure you prepare yourself to fight Sinkiang, in order to go as far as unite all of China. However, the fight with Sinkiang is inevitable, so it is best to go with the opponent focus and boosting the economy and army. Once the war breaks up, take 2 divisions to guard the east side of Hotan as the terrain bordering Sinkiang is desert and mountainous which isn't favorable for your side. Whereas, for the Kashgar front in the west with Sinkiang, hold the ground and counterattack by pinning the invasion forces and encircling by taking the city of Kashgar from Sinkiang. The fight wont be alone, considering that Sinkiang has to fight the Kumulik Khanate that is released with the "March on Hotan" focus. With that said, take as any available victory points from Sinkiang, including Hami, if the Kumulik Khanate has fallen. With this much and done, annex all of Sinkiang and declare yourself as the Sinkiang Ma.

Next to follow, Pick "Strike at the Traitors" instead of "Demand Submission" as the latter focus will take on forever to integrate and finally form Khotan Ma as the  西北三马. Fighting the Ma's can be relatively tedious. Ningxia Ma and Gansu Ma being relatively easy to take down with the outmanoeuvring strategy. And Qinghai Ma would be a decent difficulty as they have more territory (despite being known as the original Xibei San Ma). Finally with Qinghai Ma last, by using the same outmanoeuvring and pin down attack strategies, Khotan Ma can form Xibei San Ma. With this done and if the player has completed all of the warlord focuses of Khotan Ma, it is time to rush and go for Warlord subjugation in the generic Nationalist China focus tree. It would give a few wargoals for the player to strike and annex the warlords. Alternatively, go with the "Invite Foreign Investors" by rushing down all the way until you reach the "One China Policy".

Considering that the "Renegotiate the Unequal Treaties" focus is usually bypassed as Xibei San Ma doesnt have the national spirit. If China and the rest of the East sided warlords are at war with Japan, it is a good opportunity to pick targets one by one. Be vary of the territories. Of the said nations. The Northeastern Army, in comparison to Sichuan and Communist China, is an easier target. Whereas the other two tend to increase their army, and utilize their mountainous terrain. In alternative to that, use the border conflict decision missions as an alternative to gain territory against the neighbors. Make sure to fix the supply routes, research trains and improve on division templates. Otherwise, if that proves to be obsolete, simply declare war on them by "One China Policy" focus, battle them in a preferable terrain. Or, research mountaineer divisions to fare better in the mountainous battlefields.

In addition, Khotan Ma can ironically become the second most industrial power in China, only behind Chiang's  中国, thanks due to both its Warlord and Ma Clique shared focus trees.
